Eminent Russian pianist and composer, Nicolaï Karlovitch Medtner was a devoted protector of the “Sacred Rules of the Eternal Art” during a period which marked a distinct mutation in the musical language.
In 1935, he published an essay, The Muse and the Fashion, in which he advocated strong conservative opinions in favour of the musical Harmony and Counterpoint, established by the great masters of the past, and which his gigantic work follows relentlessly : in the immensity of his work, he never deserted the forms, language and musical techniques of the great musical heritage, left by Masters such as Bach, Beethoven and Brahms.
