Georgy Lvovich Catoire (1861-1926)
Complete works for Violin and Piano
Violin : Laurence Kayaleh
Piano : Stéphane Lemelin
Audio excerpts from the recent recording of Georgy Catoire’s Complete Works for Violin & Piano performed by Laurence Kayaleh & Stéphane Lemelin (NAXOS Records).
When I first discovered Georgy Catoire’s violin and piano sonatas in one of the very rare recordings available with D. Oistrakh and A. Goldenweiser, it immediately caught my attention. Catoire’s music is still very rarely performed or recorded. I decided to record his complete works for violin and piano as a continuity of Medtner’s complete works for violin and piano I recorded for Naxos a few years ago (8.570298-99). Catoire’s first sonata Op. 15 was dedicated to N. Medtner. In the second sonata Op. 20 “Poème”, Catoire’s musical writing demonstrates great inspiration and maturity. The work is written in one movement. The musical structure is very strong and solid, with striking melodies, harmonies and a unique rhythmical conception. I’m very grateful to be able to present these gorgeous works to a larger audience with Canadian pianist, Stéphane Lemelin, through this recording which means a lot to me !
